Installed for Picnic Invitational, organized by Steve Bankhead.
Opening reception for Picnic Invitational was held Saturday June 14 1PM-6PM at Eagle Rock Recreation Center, 1100 Eagle Vista Dr., Los Angeles, CA 90041. Picnic Area #2 (southeast of the recreation center)
Following the French Revolution, city parks arose not only as idyllic settings for public recreation, but also as places where monumental sculpture and other symbols of power could be placed as a constant reminder to the people who the ruling class was. During that period, parks functioned similarly to how museums function today. Presently, city parks and more specifically sculpture parks have continued in that tradition and are considered as locations to view art.
Artists participating in the Picnic Invitational will take over picnic area #2 and engage in this environment with sculpture, intervention, installation, publication, performance, performative works, etc. Various themes will be investigated; including but not limited to: site specificity, monumentality, and public vs. private.
